Dr Melanie Tokley, experienced clinical neuropsychologist and psychologist providing psychological services in Adelaide

Dr Melanie Tokley is a clinical neuropsychologist with a passion for understanding the intersection between psychiatry—the mental models and thought processes that shape our internal world—and neurology—the organic foundation of cognition. Her expertise lies in exploring the complex relationship between our emotional and cognitive processes through comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

Using a combination of formal neuropsychological assessments, clinical interviews, and behavioural observation, Dr Tokley evaluates how neurological conditions, mood, emotions, and thought patterns impact day-to-day cognitive performance. She provides in-depth analysis and reports for conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis—distinguishing between primary neurological impairment and secondary psychological effects. This integrative approach informs targeted treatment and rehabilitation strategies that optimise recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Dr. Tokley also conducts mental capacity assessments to support clients, families, and legal professionals in determining decision-making abilities in the context of medical, financial, or personal care planning. These assessments are delivered with clinical rigour and sensitivity to each individual’s unique context.

Dr. Tokley has worked internationally in the fields of neuropsychology and clinical psychology across research, academia, tertiary hospitals, private practice, and medicolegal settings. She has worked at world renowned institutions including Imperial College (London, UK), St George’s Hospital (London, UK), Wimbledon NeuroCare, Google Headquarters London, and The Mindfulness Project. Locally, Dr. Tokley has held senior positions at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and within our state’s mental health system supporting patients across acute and subacute inpatient settings, and psychiatric intensive care.

In individual therapy, Dr. Tokley integrates third-wave cognitive behavioural therapies with Compassionate Inquiry, a trauma-informed approach developed by Dr. Gabor Maté. Her therapeutic work focuses on helping clients identify and shift ingrained relational patterns that may no longer serve them in adulthood, supporting emotional resilience, self-awareness, and personal growth.
